IMF Fiscal Affairs Director Rodrigo Valdés said on Wednesday at the IMF–World
Bank annual meetings in Bangkok that the IMF does not recommend the UK
accelerate fiscal consolidation and advises "keeping the current course." The UK
ran a deficit equal to 4.4% of GDP last year and aims to bring day-to-day public
spending and tax receipts into balance by fiscal 2029/30 under its fiscal rules.
Valdés' remarks signal a relatively moderate IMF stance—the agency views the
current deficit-reduction path as feasible without more aggressive tightening;
markets will focus on the government's forthcoming fiscal plans, tax adjustments
and debt-sustainability metrics.
