A proposal to impose a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages has been submitted to
the German cabinet; if approved the tax would take effect on July 1, 2027, with
small producers exempt. Under the plan, beverages with at least 5 g sugar per
100 ml would be taxed at €0.26 per liter, and those with at least 8 g per 100 ml
at €0.32 per liter. Drinks sweetened with non-caloric sweeteners and pure fruit
juice would be excluded, as would non-alcoholic beer and wine and beverages made
from soy, nuts, seeds or cereals. The government is expected to approve the
measure on the 14th. The tax is projected to raise about €690m in 2027 and €925m
in 2028.
