The U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Roosevelt arrived at the U.S. Navy Yokosuka base in Kanagawa Prefecture on Oct. 16. The carrier departed its San Diego homeport in September and is expected to deploy to the Middle East; the stop at Yokosuka was reportedly a brief call for resupply and crew rest. It is the first port call at Yokosuka by a carrier not homeported there since 2022.

Hong Kong stocks rebounded at midday after early volatility. At noon the Hang Seng Index was up 1.21% and the Hang Seng Tech Index was up 2.09%. China property names led gains: Longfor Group (00960.HK) rose over 9%, China Vanke (02202.HK) rose over 5%, CHINA RES LAND (01109.HK) rose over 4%. Construction materials and cement outperformed: Huaxin Cement (06655.HK) rose about 6%, Conch Cement (00914.HK) rose over 4%. Power-equipment Weichai Power (02338.HK) rose over 4%. Biopharma BeiGene (06160.HK) regained ground, up nearly 6%. Other top-performing sectors included gold, select internet names, optical communications, semiconductors and commercial aerospace. Lagging sectors included domestic banks, lithium batteries, oil, dairy and port/transportation names.

As of end-September, 107 private fund managers with at least three reporting funds and CNY10bn-plus AUM oversaw 897 funds that delivered an average Jan–Sep return of 7.07%; 84 managers (78.50%) posted positive YTD returns. By strategy: 66 quant managers — 55 positive (83.33%); 29 discretionary managers — 20 positive (68.96%); 12 hybrid quant+discretionary managers — 9 positive (75%).
