U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent said he does not expect turmoil in the French
bond market to spill over to other markets after French yields surged, raising
broader questions about the country's fiscal position. He noted France is under
strain amid weeks of protests and recent weekend riots and that French debt has
lagged peers as the government seeks to rein in its deficit, but said President
Macron’s economic team is strong. 'I expect the situation in France will not
spill over to other markets,' Bessent said, adding that while the move was
unexpected, capital has flowed from some concerning countries into U.S.
Treasuries as investors seek safety.
