Iran parliament speaker Ghalibaf on Sunday called for a nationwide campaign to
reduce natural gas consumption by at least 10% as officials warn of shortages
ahead of winter. Although Iran is a major gas producer, it has long faced
domestic shortfalls and gas is a key heating fuel. Tehran says intensified
conflict with the US and Israel since February has worsened shortages, with
nearly 40 days of the heaviest fighting hitting critical infrastructure,
including gas processing facilities. Winters often drop below freezing,
particularly in northern Iran. In a video released to Iranian media Ghalibaf
said: "To get through the coming winter the whole country must work
together...cut natural gas consumption by at least 10%." He added: "Anyone who
saves gas—regardless of amount—will immediately receive a corresponding
financial reward in their bank account so everyone can feel the budgetary
benefit."
