A WBG-ESMAP and GOGLA study estimates roughly $11.4 bln is needed over the next
four years to provide reliable off-grid solar power to hundreds of millions. The
estimate includes about $1.3 bln/year in grants and subsidies and roughly $1.6
bln/year in equity, debt and receivables financing. The report says off-grid
solar remains the lowest-cost option for at least 398 mln people without
electricity and often supplements or substitutes for grid coverage. Separately,
the study reiterates that the energy transition will require an average $3–5
tln/year of investment through 2030.
