A Canadian government official familiar with negotiations said on Wednesday
talks with the U.S. have made limited progress toward an agreement to roll back
U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and autos. The latest talks are focused on
Section 232 tariffs — up to 50% on Canadian steel and 25% on autos. Tariffs have
become a political liability for President Trump ahead of next week’s midterm
elections, and border-state Republican candidates are urging an end to the trade
dispute. Trump said on Sunday the dispute would be resolved "very soon" but gave
no details; Prime Minister Carney said on Monday talks had "strengthened."
