Several senior officers have departed the Pentagon since Hegseth took office under the Trump administration; Sylvia’s dismissal is the latest amid broad cuts to senior military leadership.

Eurelectric said wholesale power prices have surged to their highest since the 2022 energy crisis and urged the EU to adopt targeted, time-limited measures to reduce consumer electricity bills. In a letter to EU energy ministers it recommended removing ‘‘non-energy costs’’ — including grid charges and environmental levies — from household bills. Several of Europe’s largest power markets have seen winter wholesale prices double versus last winter, driven mainly by a spike in gas; gas topped €100/MWh this week, more than twice its level at the start of the year. Eurelectric warned against subsidising gas-fired generation — an option under discussion in Italy — saying it would raise gas demand just as countries should be cutting consumption.
