Hungary’s government has asked parliament to pass a bill making the February
civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with the United States legally binding.
The bill, covering civilian nuclear projects including small modular reactors
(SMRs), explicitly encourages Hungary to choose US nuclear technologies and
companies as principal suppliers. The accord was signed during US Secretary of
State Rubio’s Feb. 16 visit; the foreign minister is in Washington to meet Rubio
and sign memoranda on energy and law-enforcement cooperation. The government’s
two-thirds parliamentary majority makes passage likely, cementing procurement
and regulatory certainty for US exporters.
