QatarEnergy CEO and energy minister Saad Sherida al‑Kaabi said on Thursday the
company is buying long‑term LNG from the US and other suppliers to build a
trading and arbitrage hedge. He said the mechanism is intended to generate
revenue if exports via the Strait of Hormuz are disrupted, as gas prices would
spike in that scenario. The disclosure — the first detail of the plan — signals
Qatar, one of the world’s largest LNG producers, is using long‑term purchases to
offset revenue losses from the Iran war and reduce exposure to future Hormuz
transit interruptions.
