EU Commission President Von der Leyen said Thursday the EU and Canada will
deepen cooperation on artificial intelligence, climate, energy and security. She
said the proposal to make Canada the EU’s first "associate member" faces
opposition, has no legal definition and has been put on hold. Prime Minister
Carney has sought closer ties with Europe to reduce Canada’s economic and
security dependence on the United States after Trump imposed tariffs, but with
Canada still negotiating with Washington, closer EU ties could risk antagonising
Trump, Von der Leyen added.
