A quarterly filing on Thursday said Alphabet's AI-related risk exposure far
exceeds $1 trillion. The company flagged rapidly rising cloud demand, visible in
an increased backlog of unfulfilled cloud contracts; more than one-third of the
quarter's backlog growth came from an equity-accounted joint venture. The
disclosure expands on comments from the prior day's earnings call, where the CFO
cited over $1 trillion of procurement commitments, future lease payments and
other obligations. The filing also lists about $98.5 billion of contingent
commitments—up roughly $23 billion quarter-on-quarter—including guarantees of
data-center lease payments, support for partners' purchases of power equipment,
and potential repurchases of AI chip systems from customers under specified
conditions.
