The Wall Street Journal reports U.S., European and Ukrainian officials say the
United States is backing a proposal to quickly resume Russian pipeline gas
deliveries to Europe via Ukraine as part of talks to secure an energy
“ceasefire” ahead of winter. U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Bill Witkoff raised
the idea during September visits to Moscow and Kyiv; the proposal would route
Russian gas sales through a U.S. intermediary to circumvent EU sanctions and
could create commercial opportunities for U.S. investors. Officials say proceeds
would be placed in escrow in a third-party jurisdiction to prevent the Kremlin
from diverting funds to the war, though the plan would run up against EU law
requiring a phase-out of Russian gas purchases by end‑2027.
