Dozens of US counties and cities will vote on Nov. 3 on measures that could tax,
regulate or outright ban data-center construction and AI infrastructure,
potentially putting hundreds of billions of dollars of investment at risk. More
than 40 data-center-related proposals are on the midterm ballot, a trend that
could complicate plans for Meta, major cloud providers and developers such as
Applied Digital. The measures underscore AI as a midterm issue; a Quinnipiac
University poll in September found 72% of voters oppose new data centers in
their communities, up from 65% in March.
