World Gold Council says informal gold inflows into India jumped after New Delhi
more than doubled the import duty to 15%. Citing Metals Focus, the WGC reports
informal imports rose to about 50 t in Q3 (Jul–Sep), up over 15x from 3 t a year
earlier; the report did not detail tracking methods. The council noted higher
import taxes historically increase incentives for unofficial inflows, typically
via smuggling or individuals carrying small amounts. The duty rise was aimed at
curbing gold demand and narrowing a trade deficit widened by higher energy
prices; India remains the world’s second-largest gold consumer.
