The European Commission said Montenegro could join the EU as early as 2028,
potentially restarting the bloc's enlargement process. Commissioner for
Enlargement Marta Kos told reporters the Commission could be ready to sign an
accession treaty by June 2027 if current progress continues; formal membership
would still require unanimous approval from all member states. The Commission's
candidate-country report, published Wednesday, also identified Albania, Moldova
and Ukraine as possible subsequent members on 'credible' accession paths but
provided no firm timetables.
