House Democratic leader Jeffries said midterm gains give Democrats a buffer to
advance next year’s agenda if he succeeds Johnson as speaker, prioritizing
expanded ACA subsidies, reversal of Republican Medicaid cuts, repeal of
Trump-era tariffs and an end to the war with Iran—moves he linked to lower
gasoline prices and reduced consumer costs. Senate Democratic leader Schumer
said he will pursue limits on presidential war powers and work with Republicans.
Democrats also pledged investigations into alleged government corruption that
benefited Trump and his family; Jeffries said no House Democrat has raised
impeachment and the caucus will focus on affordability and accountability.
