Challenger, a US employment consulting firm, reported that October saw the largest number of layoffs since the same period in 2003, when a peak of 171,874 layoffs occurred due to a wave of mergers and acquisitions in the retail industry and a restructuring in the telecommunications industry triggered by the widespread adoption of mobile phones.
