An average of 24,000 people shop duty-free in Hainan every day since the port was closed] Data released by the General Administration of Customs on January 14 shows that since the Hainan Free Trade Port was closed on December 18, 2025, as of January 10, 2026, the number of people supervising duty-free shopping on the island reached 585,000, amounting to 3.89 billion yuan, representing year-on-year increases of 32.4% and 49.6% respectively. This is equivalent to an average of 24,000 people shopping duty-free in Hainan every day, with an average daily shopping amount of 160 million yuan, both higher than before the port was closed.
