Samsung SDI Achieves Breakthrough in Lithium Metal Battery Technology, Potentially Paving the Way for Commercial Solutions. South Korean battery manufacturer Samsung SDI announced a breakthrough in extending the lifespan and improving the safety of lithium metal batteries, potentially paving the way for the commercialization of its next-generation products. Samsung SDI stated that it has collaborated with Columbia University to develop a fluorine-based gel polymer electrolyte that effectively suppresses dendrite formation, a key factor that long-term damages the performance of lithium metal batteries. Lithium metal batteries boast the highest energy density among existing battery technologies, exceeding that of traditional NCA lithium-ion batteries by more than 1.6 times. However, their commercialization has been hampered by their short charge-discharge lifespan (typically only a few dozen cycles).
