[ING: RBA Rate Hike is a Mixed Blessing for the Australian Dollar] ING analyst Francisco Pesolo stated that the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) 5-4 decision to raise interest rates was initially seen as a dovish move by the market. The market had previously anticipated a 65% probability of a rate hike, and the 5-4 vote caused a pullback in the Australian dollar exchange rate. However, at her press conference, RBA Governor Bullock clarified that the discussion focused on the timing of the rate hike, not whether to raise rates, and reiterated concerns about inflation. ING believes the Australian dollar's bull market is showing signs of fatigue. Swap trading is extremely hawkish, but the currency is highly sensitive to risk factors. "This reflects overly bullish positioning, requiring positive news to drive a short-term rebound." In the long term, given the Australian dollar's high interest rate differential, strong economic fundamentals, and the potential decline of the US dollar, there are reasons to maintain a bullish stance. ING's year-end target for AUD/USD is 0.74.
