[Chinese Research Team Achieves Major Breakthrough in Catalysis] The Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Southern University of Science and Technology, has made significant progress in understanding the spillover effect in heterogeneous catalysis. For the first time, researchers observed and confirmed the bulk oxygen spillover phenomenon controlled by the metal-support interface at the atomic scale, clarifying its important role in heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Based on this, they proposed a new mechanism for synergistic catalysis of metal-support "surface-interface-bulk phase." The relevant findings were published on April 15 in the international academic journal *Nature*.

China's economy is becoming more dependent on external demand despite strong performance, says Zichun Huang, economist at Capital Economics. China's 1Q GDP growth accelerated to 5.0% from 4.5% in the previous quarter. While there has been some tentative improvement in domestic demand growth, the main source of strength has been exports, Huang says, adding that the acceleration in 1Q GDP growth was driven by construction and industry. The Middle East conflict could further strengthen this trend, as higher fuel prices could drag on domestic demand, while boosting China's green tech exports, she adds.
