China has blocked Meta Platforms Inc.’s $2 billion acquisition of AI startup
Manus, ordering the deal’s cancellation, according to the National Development
and Reform Commission. The largely completed transaction triggered scrutiny over
alleged illegal foreign investment and tech exports. Initially seen as a model
for global startups, the deal is now criticized in Beijing over concerns about
AI technology transfer to the US.
