Iran said it is not a party to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the
Sea and is therefore not bound by its provisions, according to its U.N. mission.
Tehran asserted its authority as the main coastal state over the Strait of
Hormuz and said it has the “legitimate and legal right” to take proportionate
measures to address security threats and ensure navigation. The mission added
any disruption to traffic in the Persian Gulf would be the responsibility of the
U.S.
