The European Commission issued preliminary findings accusing Meta Platforms Inc.
of failing to enforce minimum age rules on Facebook and Instagram, saying the
platforms lack effective checks on users’ self-declared ages and have inadequate
tools to remove under-13s. The move escalates a probe launched in May 2024 under
the Digital Services Act, which allows fines of up to 6% of global annual
revenue. Meta can respond to the allegations and propose remedies as regulators
increase pressure on tech firms to strengthen child safety measures online.
