CME Group, the largest US derivatives exchange, is partnering with Silicon Data to develop futures contracts tied to computing power used in AI systems. The contracts aim to help traders, financial firms, AI developers, and cloud providers hedge volatility and price risk in compute markets. Silicon Data’s GPU-based benchmarks will underpin the products, which are still awaiting regulatory approval. CME CEO Terry Duffy described compute as “the new oil of the 21st century,” while BlackRock CEO Larry Fink said compute futures could emerge as a new asset class amid persistent supply shortages and strong AI-driven demand.
