Xi Jinping criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s military buildup
during his summit with President Donald Trump in Beijing, the Financial Times
reported, citing people familiar with the meeting. The report said Xi became
vocal and agitated while discussing Japan’s rising defense spending, surprising
US officials as Japan had not been a major topic before the talks. Trump
reportedly told Xi that Japan’s more assertive security stance reflected growing
threats from North Korea.
