The Chinese Embassy in South Korea told reporters it was responding to recent
remarks by U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) commander Brunson, who recently said “Korea
is like a dagger pointing at China” and who last year said “Korea is a fixed
aircraft carrier between China and Japan.” South Korean media have commented
that Brunson’s comments reflect a U.S. desire to use South Korea as a forward
outpost to contain China. The embassy spokesperson said USFK responsibilities
are clear and that China’s position on USFK is explicit. Noting South Korean
media warnings that Brunson “you have crossed the line,” the spokesperson said:
we also wish to warn the USFK commander “your remarks have indeed crossed the
line.” The spokesperson urged the USFK commander to respect regional countries
and to take actions that support regional peace and stability.
