Wu Kai, chief scientist at CATL and an academician of the Chinese Academy of
Engineering, said CATL will put a series of sodium‑ion battery products into
mass production this year, noting sodium‑ion batteries use more abundant,
lower‑cost raw materials than lithium‑ion batteries. He said CATL will next
focus on lithium‑air battery R&D; lithium‑air uses a lithium anode and ambient
oxygen as the cathode reactant, offers ultra-high theoretical energy density,
and will be a focal point in next‑generation global battery competition.
