AFP reported May 29 that Iranian state media said authorities are preparing a
“grand” funeral for the country’s slain former supreme leader Ali Khamenei. The
burial had been long delayed amid Iran’s war with the US and Israel; timing
remains uncertain. Iran’s state TV, citing Islamic Propaganda Coordination
Council head Mohsen Mahammadi, said a special headquarters has been set up and
government departments are making arrangements. Khamenei, who led Iran for more
than 30 years, was killed in the first wave of US‑Israeli strikes that began
Feb. 28. His son and successor, Mujtaba Khamenei, was wounded in the attack and
has not appeared publicly since taking office.
