CHINA FOREIGN MINISTER Wang Yi met in Beijing on the 4th with Michelle Bachelet, a candidate for the next UN secretary-general. Bachelet said the UN is indispensable for addressing global challenges, affirmed she firmly upholds the One-China policy, and welcomed China’s long-standing support for multilateralism and the UN; she said she is willing to work with China to strengthen the UN’s role. Wang said the next secretary-general will influence UN reform and development over the next five to ten years and will affect member states’ interests, especially those of the Global South; China will participate in the selection process in a responsible, constructive manner to help restore the UN’s authority and vitality.
