Challenger, a U.S. employment data company, reported that the service sector laid off 6,268 employees in May, bringing the year-to-date total to 17,065, a 61% decrease from the 44,273 announced in the same period of 2025. The healthcare and medical product manufacturing industry (including hospitals) has announced 30,414 layoffs this year, a 17% increase from the 26,008 announced in the same period of 2025.
