WFP acting executive director warned the Middle East crisis is spilling into
global food security by pushing up energy and food prices; if it persists about
45 million people could face hunger. He cited rising food and fuel costs and
chronic underfunding of humanitarian and development aid; with East Africa
entering planting and rainy seasons, fertilizer shortages and higher operating
costs could cut output and tighten supplies over the next 6-9 months, and the
crisis’ long-term impact on food security may be more severe.
