Axios reported three sources said Qatar-mediated talks narrowed three major U.S.-Iran differences during meetings that ran into Wednesday night. Qatar and Iranian delegations told sources they had a text they believed the U.S. would accept. The gaps narrowed on: a mechanism for releasing Iran’s frozen assets (Tehran’s top priority); arrangements to reopen the Strait of Hormuz during a 60-day ceasefire; and how to negotiate Iran’s nuclear program during that 60-day pause. Iranian officials told multiple countries on Thursday the talks in Tehran produced a principled agreement, but final sign-off from the Supreme Leader is required. Earlier, Trump publicly said a deal was near; Iran has not confirmed that claim.
