A senior U.S. official told CNN that Iran has committed to permanently not seek
or develop nuclear weapons, a concession Washington described as significant.
The official said the deal is designed to establish verification and inspection
mechanisms and to withhold benefits until the U.S. can verify Tehran has taken
concrete steps to dismantle its nuclear program. Negotiators had discussed 10-
or 20-year non‑weapons pledges; the official noted prior U.S. objections,
including from Trump, that time‑limited bans were insufficient. The U.S. said it
would permit Iran civilian nuclear energy but opposes infrastructure that could
enable a weapons breakout.
