On June 17 two US officials said Washington and Tehran remotely signed a
memorandum intended to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz; the
agreement is now in effect. One official said President Trump personally signed
the document; the signing had been scheduled for June 19 in Switzerland but was
expedited. A mediator’s diplomat and another source said parties discussed
accelerating the timeline to open the strait; Iran requested the text remain
confidential until the formal signing, and a source denied the White House
advanced the timing for political reasons. Delegations led by US Vice President
Vance and Iranian parliament speaker Ghalibaf are still expected to meet in
Switzerland on June 19.
