Deputy prime minister and foreign minister Antonio Tajani canceled a US visit
scheduled for June 21-22, saying US President Trump’s remarks were “serious and
offensive” and “offended the whole of Italy.” Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said
she was “shocked” by comments Trump made to Italian La7 TV, in which he said
Meloni was “very eager” to pose with him at the G7, that he agreed only out of
"pity," and that she might be "glad" he spoke to her though he did not have to.
Meloni called the remarks “fabricated” and added “Italy never begs anything.”
