US reports on June 19 said more than 160 service members at Lackland Air Force
Base in Texas have been infected with influenza in recent weeks. The Air Force
said medical and public-health personnel have isolated and treated symptomatic
individuals to limit further exposure, are continuing monitoring, and that those
symptomatic are receiving appropriate treatment and will return to training once
cleared by medical staff. The Air Force also said a member of the 737th Training
Support Squadron suffered a medical emergency during basic training and died
earlier this week at Brooke Army Medical Center; the cause is under
investigation and a comprehensive medical review is underway.
