IBM Research on Thursday said it has produced the world’s first sub-1nm chip using a 0.7nm transistor architecture, claiming up to 50% higher performance and 70% better energy efficiency versus its 2nm process prototype. The group framed the result as research-stage only, saying large-scale manufacturing and aligning manufacturing cost with performance gains remain the key challenges; it did not claim the design is currently manufacturable. IBM noted it delivered a 2nm prototype in May 2021 and said major foundries are now producing related products.
