As a record-breaking heatwave eases, a new Atlantic-driven high-pressure system is expected to build toward and over the continent in coming days, displacing cooler air and bringing renewed extreme heat to Spain, France and the UK. Forecasts show highs this week of about 43°C in Portugal and 41°C in southern Spain; Paris around 30°C on Friday and London about 31°C on Monday. Rising frequency and intensity of heatwaves is adding pressure to health services, transport and power systems and exposing housing vulnerabilities in cities such as London. UK Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said the third heatwave to affect western Europe since late May is unlikely to reach the extreme temperatures seen last month.
