A June 30 report says Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar are engaging in direct talks with Iran alongside US‑Iran negotiations. Citing a decline in US credibility, Gulf states are recalibrating ties. After a US‑Iran memorandum, Iran and Oman held a first meeting on management of the Strait of Hormuz. Follow‑up talks are planned between Oman and Qatar, Iran and Saudi Arabia, and Qatar and Saudi Arabia to outline post‑conflict coexistence. Discussions focus on Strait of Hormuz navigation arrangements and potential economic incentives Gulf states might offer Iran in exchange for security concessions. These talks are concurrent with but independent from US‑Iran negotiations.

China's Central Meteorological Observatory said the ninth named storm of the season, Bavi (tropical-storm intensity), formed on July 2. At 08:00 its center was at 11.0°N, 160.1°E — about 1,620 km ESE of Guam. Central pressure 998 hPa; max winds near the center 18 m/s (~35 kt); 7-level wind radius 180–280 km. Bavi is moving WNW at ~20 km/h and is expected to gradually strengthen and could reach super-typhoon strength (58–65 m/s, 17+ level). The observatory said Bavi will not affect Chinese waters over the next six days but will tend toward China's southeast coast after July 9.
