Bloomberg reported Australia and Fiji signed a new defense pact aimed at
countering China’s influence in the South Pacific. At a July 6 foreign ministry
briefing, CHINA said its cooperation with Pacific island states is based on
mutual respect, equality and win‑win cooperation, and that it does not engage in
geopolitical rivalry or pursue political self-interest. CHINA urged relevant
parties to respect island autonomy, prioritize sustainable economic and social
development, and avoid actions that target or harm third parties.
