Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally and chair of its parliamentary group
in the National Assembly, said on the evening of July 7 she will run in the 2027
presidential election. Le Pen has polled strongly in recent French surveys and
has run three times previously, reaching the second round in 2017 and 2022 but
losing both to President Emmanuel Macron. Earlier on July 7 the Paris Court of
Appeal upheld her conviction for misappropriation of public funds but amended
her sentence, restoring her legal eligibility to stand in 2027.
