Experts point out that even with the latest round of attacks by the United States, Iran likely still has the capability to threaten shipping safety in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy transport routes. "This ceasefire agreement was already unsustainable because the Iranian government, which signed it, has no jurisdiction over the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)," said Carl Schuster, former director of the Joint Intelligence Center at U.S. Pacific Command. The Revolutionary Guard Corps is Iran's elite force, completely independent of its conventional armed forces. They control the country's missile arsenal and are tasked with defending the gains of the Islamic Revolution. This force reports only to Iran's Supreme Leader and has shown little interest in reaching an agreement with Washington—at least not one acceptable to President Trump.
