OpenAI said it will stop development of its AI browser Atlas on Aug. 9 and will
fold some Atlas features into the ChatGPT desktop app and a Chrome extension.
The decision comes less than a year after OpenAI launched ChatGPT Atlas in Oct.
2025 and abandons its plan to offer a standalone AI browser to challenge Chrome;
competitors including Perplexity (Comet) and The Browser Company (Dia) continue
pursuing AI browser products.
