At 09:00 on July 11 the center of Typhoon Bawei (the ninth storm of the season)
was about 460 km southeast of the Zhejiang–Fujian border, with peak winds near
the center of 14 on the Chinese scale (≈42 m/s). Bawei is expected to make
landfall on the Zhejiang coast between Sanmen and Cangnan in the early hours of
July 12 at typhoon strength (12–13 on the Chinese scale, 33–40 m/s), then turn
northwest and north. Heavy to torrential rain, locally extreme, is forecast
across eastern and northern Jiangnan, Jianghan, Jianghuai and Huanghuai. The
Central Meteorological Observatory issued a red heavy-rain warning and an orange
typhoon warning at 10:00 on July 11. The National Flood Control and Drought
Relief Headquarters activated a level-4 flood/typhoon emergency response at
11:00 on July 11 for Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi and Sichuan.
