JTB forecasts 2.17 mln outbound trips for this summer (Jul 15–Aug 31), down 8.8% YoY and the first YoY decline since the 2023 post‑pandemic recovery, citing yen weakness and rising costs. Per‑trip outbound spending is seen rising 6.3% to ¥323,000 (~$2,000), as higher airfares and fuel surcharges after the Middle East crisis raise overseas travel costs and push travelers away from long‑haul markets (North America, Australia) toward cheaper nearby destinations; South Korea accounts for 26.2% of outbound bookings. Domestic travel is projected to fall 4.4% to 69.0 mln trips, though per‑trip domestic spending is expected to rise 3.2% to ¥48,500; JTB warns domestic demand may be further pressured by consumer thrift amid inflation.
