Springer Nature's July 13 white paper shows that, as of July 2025, nearly 40% of
citations to gold open-access (OA) articles by Chinese researchers published in
2022 originated outside China. Springer Nature Greater China said the 2022 gold
OA output drew strong attention from Global South researchers, underscoring open
access's role in international knowledge sharing and facilitating global
research collaboration.
