Sina Azodi, assistant professor of Middle Eastern politics at George Washington University, stated that the Iran war has given more power to hardliners within the Iranian government than those advocating for negotiations with the United States. Different factions exist within the Iranian political system, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, chief nuclear negotiator Mohammad Ghalibaf, and groups within the Revolutionary Guard. These factions believe Iran has won the war but needs to reach an agreement with the United States to stabilize. However, Azodi points out that another faction (the hardliners) believes Iran should use its victory to completely expel the United States from the region. Although Iran has historically been known for its slow decision-making and factional politics, the Iran war has changed everything. Azodi stated, “I believe that those who advocate for more conflict now have greater power and influence.”
