India's electronics and IT minister announced on Wednesday an additional 1.28 trillion rupees (about $13.3 bln) to support domestic chip manufacturing, expanding a 2021 $10 bln incentive scheme. The earlier program pledged to cover roughly half of semiconductor project construction costs and helped attract Micron and Tata to Gujarat. The initiative remains at an early stage with only a few large projects under way; the government, led by Prime Minister Modi, aims to leverage Indian engineering and design talent plus subsidies to draw major chipmakers.
